Our Activities in the Mandarin-Speaking World

Since 2019, Holistic Biography Work (HBW) has been working in close collaboration with the Taiwan Association for the Promotion of Anthroposophical Biography Work (TWA)anthrobiography.org — to establish and develop Biography Work training in the Mandarin-speaking world.

Our work in Taiwan has developed as a genuine partnership: TWA provides the local organisation, translation, community and — increasingly — the trained Group-guides and Trainers who now carry much of the work. Karl-Heinz Finke and Laura Summerfield provide the curriculum, lectures, mentoring and ongoing support.

Together we have delivered two complete 3-year Training Cycles in Taiwan, and a third is now underway. One Mentoring Cycle has been completed, and a second runs alongside the current training from April 2026.

Training Program in Taiwan

1st Training Cycle: January 2019 – May 2022

Delivered onsite at two locations — Yilan and Mingdao (Changhua). Led by Karl-Heinz Finke and Laura Summerfield. Approximately 45 graduates across the two groups. This first cycle established the foundations of Holistic Biography Work in Taiwan, with TWA as the local organising body.

2nd Training Cycle: 2022 – 2025

Delivered online due to Covid-19 travel restrictions. Led by Karl-Heinz Finke and Laura Summerfield, with support from TWA and Group-guides from the first cycle. Approximately 60 graduates. Participants included students from Taiwan, Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Malaysia.

3rd Training Cycle: April 2026 – early 2029

Delivered online, and now carried by TWA with support from Karl-Heinz Finke and Laura Summerfield. This cycle marks an important step in TWA’s development as an independent training body. Group-guides and Trainers from the first and second mentoring cycles facilitate group-work. Participants include students from Taiwan and Mainland China as a single, mixed cohort, with all delivery in spoken Mandarin.

What the Training Involves

The Training Program in Holistic Biography Work follows the same curriculum structure in Taiwan as internationally:

  • 3-year program — Foundation Course (FND) plus 12 modules over three years, organised in three parts: Biographical Keys, Encounter, and Guidance & Self-guidance.
  • 4 modules per year — three Theme modules of three days each, plus one Core module of four days. Each module begins with a comprehensive Learning Pack (Study Guide, readings, activities, and recorded lectures from Karl-Heinz Finke) for self-paced study, followed by online sessions with facilitated small group-work.
  • 3 practical projects — one each year, integrating theory with lived practice.
  • Qualification — successful completion of all three years leads to a Diploma in Biographical Consultancy, following the Guidelines for Biography Trainings developed by the School of Spiritual Science (Goetheanum, Switzerland).
  • Language — delivered in spoken Mandarin, with all learning materials translated into Traditional Chinese. Simplified Chinese materials are available for participants from Mainland China.

Online Mentoring Program

1st Mentoring Cycle: 2022 – 2025

Ran alongside the 2nd Training Cycle. Conducted by Karl-Heinz Finke and Laura Summerfield under the HBW umbrella, with organisational support from TWA. Mentees who graduated from this cycle are now accredited Group-guides and Trainers, facilitating group-work in the current Training Cycle.

2nd Mentoring Cycle: April 2026 – early 2029

Runs alongside the 3rd Training Cycle, under the HBW umbrella with support from TWA. Open to graduates of a recognised Biography Training — including graduates from Taiwan, Mainland China, Hong Kong and Malaysia. The Mentoring Program is conducted by Karl-Heinz Finke and Laura Summerfield.

What the Mentoring Involves

The Mentoring Program is a three-year post-graduate pathway for graduates of a recognised Biography Training who wish to become Group-guides and Trainers.

Mentees participate in the Training Program again — not as Trainees, but in three rotating roles across the modules each year: Participant, Learning-assistant, and Group-guide. Each role develops different capacities and broadens the Mentee’s awareness from the content of the sharing toward group dynamics and the art of facilitation.

Mentees also:

  • Attend preparatory sessions before each module and evaluation sessions afterwards.
  • Complete an Adult Learning module each year (Guiding Groups, Holistic Adult Education, Designing Integrated Programs).
  • Submit short reflective papers.
  • Graduate as accredited Group-guides and Trainers, qualified to facilitate groups within a Biography Training, and eligible to apply for accreditation of their own independent training.

The Biography Log-book in Mandarin

Our Biography Log-book, co-authored by Karl-Heinz Finke and Laura Summerfield, provides a systematic and creative framework for reflecting on a life story. It is available in both:

  • Traditional Chinese (正體中文) — 生命傳記練習本, translated by Chen Hsiu-Ping (陳脩平), published in Taiwan by 三元生活實踐社 (March 2020). Print edition: contact TWA. eBook edition: available in our Webshop.
  • Simplified Chinese (简体中文) — translated by Li Jing. Print edition: contact cmbiography@outlook.com. eBook edition: available in our Webshop.

The Log-book is useful for personal reflection, family legacy work, study groups, and professional practitioners working with clients on biographical themes.

Looking Ahead — A Mandarin Biography Work Community

Our long-term vision is the formation of an independent, self-sustaining Biography Work community across the Mandarin-speaking world:

  • Taiwan — TWA continues as the accredited training body, now carrying the Training Program with its own generation of Group-guides and Trainers.
  • Mainland China — CN Mentees in the current Mentoring Cycle are working toward establishing an independent CN training from 2030 onwards.
  • Hong Kong, Malaysia, and beyond — Mandarin-speaking participants from across the region are welcome in both the Training and the Mentoring.
  • Annual Offshore Workshop and Meeting — from 2027, Karl and Laura will offer an annual biography-related workshop in an accessible third country (Thailand or Malaysia), open to Mandarin-speaking participants.
