Communication Skills is about noticing the three activities of thinking, feeling and will or motivation as they happen in a speaker — not only what someone says, but how they say it. Is their thinking linear or associative, straight to the point or circling back? How does their feeling weave through the voice and the breathing? And what are they actually trying to achieve? A person’s thinking, feeling and will or motivation shape what a listener is able to catch, which is why we practise observing these activities rather than only the content. The central exercise is Discerning Listening: you follow the speaker’s thinking with your own thinking, their feeling with your breathing, and you sense their will or motivation. In the group-work you bring two incidents from your own life and work in a small group as Speaker, Listener and Observer. This Learning Pack is a 78-page Study Guide in 10 Parts, with 5 recorded Lectures, background reading, creative and observation exercises, and guided self-reflection. 55 hours in all — 40 self-paced, 15 in guided group-work online. It is the first of our two modules on the communication that underlies The Helping Conversation, and is recommended before it.
